Parker's 2 Year Check-Up

Monday (March 1st) Parker had his 2 year check-up! STILL in shock that my "BaBy" boy is TWO already but I'm sure every mother feels that way. His stats this time really surprised me!! He was both shorter and heavier than I expected! To preface this, I guess I should share all his previous stats...

Birth:
weight: 6 lbs. 14 oz. (*23%)
height: 18 1/2 in. (*13%)
*I wasn't told these percentages in the hospital or at the doctor's office like the other stats...these stats were obtained @ http://pediatrics.about.com/cs/usefultools/l/bl_percentiles.htm -thanks again for telling me about it Kristin

1 Month Check-Up:
weight: 9 lbs. 4 3/4 oz. (27%)
height: 21 1/4 in. (34%)

2 Month Check-Up:
weight: 12 lbs. 9 3/4 oz. (39%)
height: 23 3/4 in. (61%)

4 Month Check-Up:
weight: 14 lbs. 15 3/4 oz. (29%)
height: 25 1/4 in. (61%)

6 Month Check-Up:
weight: 16 lbs. 10 3/4 oz. (40%)
height: 27 in. (60%)

9 Month Check-Up:
weight: 18 lbs. 11 3/4 oz. (10%)
height: 28 3/4 in. (66%)

1 Year Check-Up:
weight: 18 lbs. 3 oz. (1%)
height: 29 3/4 in. (50%)

15 Month Check-Up:
weight: 21 lbs. 6 1/4 oz. (8%)
height: 31 in. (46%)

18 Month Check-Up:
weight: 21 lbs. 8 oz. (5%)
height: 31 3/4 in. (50%)

and last but not least...2 Year Check-Up:
weight: 24 lbs. 8 oz. (15%)
height: 33 1/2 in. (30%)

I couldn't believe that Parker now weighs 24 1/2 pounds!!! I thought he'd weigh 23 pounds MAX!! After all, he gained less than 2 OZ. between his 15 and 18 month check-up so I figured the weight gain between 18 and 24 months would be very slight as well. Instead he ended up gaining 3 LBS!! I also couldn't believe that he was finally back in the double digits for his weight percentile! As you can see from his above stats, the largest he's ever been weight/percentile wise is 40% (@ 6 months), but since 9 months, his weight percentile had always been in the single digits. I know that being in the 15th percentile for weight is still very small (I mean, that means that 85% of kids his age weigh more than him), but that 15% seemed HUGE to me, lol!

The height was another shocker because as you can see from his previous stats, he had been between 46-50% in height since his 1 year check-up and before that was between 60-66% from 2-6 months. Anyway, so that's why his height only being in the 30th percentile was shocking to me just like the weight was shocking to me! His other recent appointments the percentiles had all been about the same as they had been at recent previous appointments and at this 2 year check-up it was like I had a different kid!

Anyway...I'm sure that was completely boring for everyone to see but I wanted to take a look back and this is the best place for me to do that. Plus, if anyone else is like me, they enjoy looking at and comparing baby stats! ;) The rest of the appointment went pretty well.

I didn't think he was supposed to have any shots at this appointment but apparently he missed a shot a while back...they couldn't explain to me how that had happened but at least he's caught up now! They also do a finger prick blood test at age 2 to check lead levels. I HATE seeing him get shots/give blood!!! It doesn't help that the woman who was taking his blood for the lead test seemed to be in a bad mood and was acting really rough with Parker!! I was seriously SOOO annoyed with this woman! I wanted to say "Umm...he's TWO lady...can you PLEASE treat him like he's TWO and not like your taking blood from some criminal??!!" I just can't stand to see my baby in pain and don't understand how people can treat such a young child with such insensitivity! Okay...sorry...I'm off my soapbox now! I wish I didn't have to wait a whole year to find out how much he weighs but I'll be interested to see how much weight he gains and how tall he gets this year!! :)

Click on that link. I like that percentile calculator because it gives a specific percentile number instead of a range. The only thing I DON'T like is that Eve is always under the 3rd percentile for weight and it will just say "under 3rd percentile" instead of the exact number. If it's under the 3rd percentile or above the 97th percentile, it's considered extreme, and I haven't found a single online percentile calculator that will give numbers past these extremes. My doctor's office doesn't tell me percentiles, so I always just look them up when I go home. Once a nurse at a different clinic told me that Eve's weight was 0.5 percentile (meaning less that 1) so I just know that she's extremely tiny. It's fun to know the numbers, I don't know why, it just feels special because they are so unique to your child.
I'm glad Parker is doing well and sorry about that nurse, geessh!

  2. Thanks Kristin! I just went to the site but I wondered if there is any way to enter both pounds and ounces? Parker was 6 lbs. 14 oz. when he was born but I tried typing that in where it asks for the weight in pounds and when I entered it, it thought I was just saying he was 6 pounds. There's a huge difference between the percentile for 6 verses 7 pounds too so I was hoping there was some way to put in more specific weight...

  3. Well since there are 16 oz in a lbs, you have to divide the number of 0z by 16 to get a decimal. So since Parker was 6 lbs 14 oz. you have to take 14 and divide it by 16: you get 0.875, so he was essentially 6.875 lbs, and according to that website that put him in the 28th percentile.

  4. Oops, I meant 23rd percentile, I accidentally clicked "girl" the first time out of habit.

  5. Thanks Kristin! I'll edit his stats to show that as his weight percentile at birth...

  6. Can you enter 6.14 pounds? I'm not sure if that matters.
Sorry to hear you had to deal with that nurse. Hopefully you won't get her the next time.

  7. Sounds like he is one healthy boy!

I have a problem too with people working with young children or even adults who are so rude when doing medical tests. Don't they realize it can be scary to many people, and they are making it so much worse by being rude?!?
