To help Parker with transitions, we like to give him 5 minute warnings as a way to let him kind of mentally prepare to end one activity and move on to another. We mainly use this when it's almost time to clean up and go upstairs for his nap/bedtime and when it's almost time to clean up/leave to go somewhere. We'll let him that "in 5 minutes it will be time to...". Lately, he has been telling us that he wants to do whatever it is he is wanting to do that we have told him we're not going to do, "for 5 minutes". It's like he thinks if he says that he only wants to do it for 5 minutes, it will be allowed. He understands the basic concept, but because he's only 2, he doesn't technically know how long 5 minutes IS (which I am fully aware of but since he understands the general idea that 5 minutes isn't very long, we say it). Here are some funny examples of times he has used it lately...
"Want to watch 'Tow Mater and Light McQueen' for 5 minutes" (He probably says this phrase at least twice/day...he LOVES "Cars")
"Read the book for 5 minutes please" (instead of just asking to have the book read to him)
I know there were other funny ones but I can't think of them now. I'll try to listen closely this week and if he says more, I'll add them here later! :)
